Mike Johnston, B.A., M.A., R.C.C.

Brief Introduction

My private practice specialises in supporting youth aged 16+, and adults. The people I work with may be seeking help to address a variety of issues, such as anxiety and depression, emotional dysregulation, challenges in relationships, mood or personality disorders, and trauma. Such issues can immensely impact our lives and evoke serious concerns about personal meaning. Our experiences can shape how we make sense of ourselves, how we see our lives going, and how we establish meaningful connections to others.

Psychotherapy can offer a professional relationship you can use to learn about yourself. In practice, our work will focus on gaining a deeper understanding of your inner experience. We can all get stuck in patterns created from a mix of personal and environmental factors — through greater awareness of how you relate to yourself and to others, you may free yourself up and live your life with more clarity.

I offer a 15-minute, free consultation over the phone. This vital step in the process helps us each determine if we are the right fit for one another and which areas of your life you would like to support. Please see the section On Therapy to find out more about my approach and whether I might be a good fit for you.

Methodologies / Approach

  • I use Mentalisation Based Therapy (MBT), a therapy initially created to help people with Borderline Personality Disorder, but which is broadly helpful to a variety of problems, including anxiety and depression, PTSD/ and complex trauma, addiction, and relationship and attachment issues.

  • In addition to MBT, I find psychodynamic psychotherapy a helpful way to learn about ourselves and make changes in our lives.
